Actor James Franco has just been announced as the new male celebrity spokesmodel for Gucci‘s new Made to Measure line of tailored clothing. This new Made to Measure line of menswear will be handmade in Italy and will consist of 82 textiles which, according to the just released press announcement, will allow for 178 possible combinations of colors and fabrics. But, I’m guessing, it’s the promo ad campaign that will be getting all of the attention. For the campaign, Franco was photographed in a 1940′s type setting. Gucci is pleased to announce that actor, writer, and director James Franco will star in a special advertising campaign, entitled “All the world’s a stage,” dedicated to the House’s new MADE TO MEASURE service: a personalized, luxury sartorial offering for the modern day gentleman. Shot at Rome’s Cinecittà by French photographer Nathaniel Goldberg with the art direction of creative agency REM, the campaign features Franco in a film studio and on a set in a selection of custom MADE TO MEASURE suits. The striking black and white photographs mirror the House’s synergy with cinema, a relationship that dates back to the 1940s. Throughout his career, Franco has turned to Creative Director Frida Giannini for his bespoke red carpet wardrobe and last February hosted the 83rd Annual Academy Awards exclusively in MADE TO MEASURE looks. Most recently this September, Franco joined Giannini as a jury member for the Gucci Women in Cinema Award at the Venice International Film Festival. “James has an innate ability to fuse classic elegance with contemporary style and interpret formalwear in an individual way, true to the spirit of our MADE TO MEASURE service” said Giannini. “With Gucci’s Made in Italy tradition and sartorial expertise, personalized formalwear is the ultimate way for a man to express his own style.” Gucci’s MADE TO MEASURE service further advances the House’s philosophy of personalization and signature attention to detail. In addition to offering fabrics from an exclusive selection, the service provides for customizable options with finishes and details and allows for personal tailoring according to the client’s individual measurements. Each garment is impeccably tailored for a truly unique experience. The range of exclusive, top-quality materials includes nearly 82 textiles which allow for 178 possible combinations of colors and fabrics – wool, cashmere and mohair in classic shades of gray, navy blue and brown, alongside silk satin, velvet and baby lama for evening, with Diamante embroidery and jacquards featuring the House’s iconic horsebit in tone-on-tone combinations. The special pieces that Franco wears in the campaign stand out for their surfaces that revisit traditional graphic textures intrinsic to sartorial menswear – from pinstripes to checks, from diagonal stripes to Prince of Wales plaids. Painstaking attention pours into exclusive and personalized details such as the satin lining with the Gucci logo or the label that may feature embroidery with the client’s name or initials. The clothes are packed away in a special garment bag complete with a wooden hanger. The MADE TO MEASURE service is completed by a customized selection of shirts from which the client may choose a fit from a complete existing proposal of recognizable Gucci silhouettes in a wide range of fabrics and colors – 26 textiles allowing for 66 possible combinations of colors and fabrics. In addition, Gucci offers a MADE TO ORDER service for signature men’s shoes – allowing for selection of the material, color, width, as well as embossing of one’s initials. The new MADE TO MEASURE service will be rolled out progressively around the world starting from November to become available in 11 select Gucci boutiques by the end of the year*. Highly specialized staff will assist the client throughout the fabric selection, fittings, finalization and the delivery of the garment, which can require from 4 to 6 weeks to produce.
Yeah, I’m gonna guess that these made-to-order offerings will not be inexpensive … so … totally not my thing. But, I think James Franco looks great in these photos. While his wackiness can sometimes grate on my nerves, I think James is better seen than heard. In that regard, he will make a great spokesmodel for Gucci, I think. The man does look good in a suit, you gotta admit.
