How to Join a Drumming Circle

Gordon Lightfoot is known as one of Canada's greatest songwriters. His influence on songwriters world-wide is unquestionable. The secret to Lightfoot's success lies in his lyrics and their simplicity. In the first of a series of articles we will analyze two of Gordon Lightfoot's greatest hits: "If You Could Read My Mind" and "Sundown".

Quote Of The Day

"The biggest misconception people have about my mother is that she was so unhappy. I think people enjoy thinking that — some of them, anyway. They see the tragedy as opposed to the fact that she understood how to play tragedy.
I remember somebody at school once said something really mean about her: 'Oh, Judy does [...]

Katy Steps Out Stateside For The First Time Post Russell!

And looking absolutely FABOOSH, might we add!
At the grand opening of 1 OAK at Las Vegas' Mirage Hotel & Casino last night, Katy Perry made her first public appearance since announcing her divorce from Russell Brand, alongside jewelry designer and event co-host Markus Molinari and sporting her new electric blue locks!
Ch-ch-check her out (above)!
A nice [...]

He really still thinks he can slither his way out of this one, doesn't he?

Dr. Conrad Murray, who was sentenced to fours in prison in November for the involuntary manslaughter of Michael Jackson, has filed legal documents to appeal his conviction, on the basis of "improper exclusion of defense evidence and witnesses that resulted in violating the defendant's State and constitutional rights to due process, to present a defense and to the effective assistance of counsel," and is even requesting that pending the ruling, he be released from jail!

Oh, but don't worry! He's willing to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet!

How flexible of him!

Yeesh! If he wants to appeal, that's his prerogative, but we think he should stay right where he is!

Camille Grammer Tweets About Kelsey Grammer Pregnancy

Real Housewives’ Camille Grammer has apparently tweeted her well wishes to her ex-husband Kelsey Grammer and his pregnant wife Kayte Walsh. Get the details behind the announcement, and what the reality star had to say below. Longtime actor Kelsey Grammer and his new wife Kayte Walsh are expecting. The Boss star, who just recently took home a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Mayor Tom Kane on the hit Starz series, confirmed the news backstage at the big event just this past week. According to USA Today, the former Cheers and Frasier actor also shared that they are having twins to boot. The fifty-six year old Grammer already has two kids with his ex-wife Camille Grammer. As many will remember the two had a terrible public divorce after Kelsey left his wife of fourteen years, immediately moving on, and wedding his mistress, flight attendant Kayte Walsh. While Grammer and Walsh were happy about making the big announcement, Camille Grammer had reportedly come out to tell the media she and her children had no knowledge about the twins. “Camille and the children had no idea. They found out about it from the media. Once again, selfish Kelsey decided to do what’s [...]

Stars Party At Sundance And First Film Gets Standing Ovation

It’s winter and the time of year that the stars come out to play at Park City, Utah, for the annual Sundance Film Festival. This year there are a whole horde of celebs promoting their films and partying together over the 10 day event. There must be so many stories and goings on…what happens in [...]

Last night I saw the brilliant Cynthia Nixon play a role on stage what could well be the performance of her life, and that will see her take home the Tony award. Wit has just opened on Broadway in NY and she got not 1 but 2 standing ovations for her portrayal of Vivian Bearing, a stage 4 ovarian cancer patient undergoing aggressive treatment… Oh my goodness, it took my breath away!

Wit is on at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater and if you are in NYC or passing through, I cannot recommend this play more highly. Cynthia Nixon is most well known for her portrayal of Sex and the city’s Miranda, and I would assume that most people see her as a good actress but maybe not a great one. I never imagined that she would be this good! I now see her as an outstanding actress.

Margaret Edson’s play, cleverly titled ‘Wit’ is about about cancer and poetry. It was Off Broadway in the late 1990s and won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for drama. Don’t expect light comedy, but humor (the most profound and amazing kind) is in abundance. The story centers on a poetry professor (Cynthia) reflecting on her life, relationships and own humanity as she lies in hospital dying from a very aggressive form of cancer.

Cynthia Nixon never leaves the stage, and performs what appears to be a monologue, a one-woman show stopping performance. I think I can say quite confidently that it was one of the bravest, most vulnerable performances I have ever seen (not to give too much away about the end) but Cynthia has shaved her head for the role and has 100% shed every ounce of Miranda left in her. Cynthia herself is a cancer survivor, and I do believe that she is treating this play and this character as the role of her life…

I left the theater blown away, numb, and the woman siting next to me told me that she is a 9 year survivor of stage 4 ovarian cancer. This just topped off my night – if I didn’t have shivers running down my body already (which I did), I certainly did after that.

See this show!!! I very rarely say this without reservation… and expect to laugh, cry and be thoroughly transformed. I will never watch a scene with Carrie and Miranda the same way again.

The Benefits Of Artistic Obscurity

No matter what style of singer you may wish to be, it is very important to understand how to look after your voice and most importantly understand how your voice works. You wouldn't dream of entering a Triathalon without months of training for the event, and yet with singing many of us just expect our voices to be able to tackle anything we throw at it without any training at all.

The White House Will Not Support Controversial Internet Piracy Bills SOPA or PIPA

The internet has been banding together over the last few weeks to fight the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) and has just gained a very powerful ally — the White House!

Well, that didn't last long.

After just two terrible episodes (according to the critics and just about everybody watching), ABC's Work It has been cancelled.

The show, which featured two men dressing up as women so they could find work, premiered to dismal ratings and immediately sparked LGBT advocacy organizations to campaign against it.

Herndon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs and Communications at GLAAD, called the offensive show "outdated" as he explained:

“While many of ABC’s positive and groundbreaking portrayals of LGBT people have been critical and popular successes, the public had little interest in this outdated show. As a result of this campaign, an important dialogue has been started in Hollywood and mainstream media about the real discrimination faced by transgender people today.”

Reruns of Tim Allen's Last Man Standing will replace the cancelled show's 8:30 p.m. time slot on Tuesdays for the rest of January until new episodes of Cougar Town fill in.

Are U happy Work It got the axe or would U have liked the show to continue?

Singing Basics Must a Vocal Coach Always Start There?

Music is universally accepted and recognised as an art form and medium. But how, when and where it came about is something that is yet to be written about. For purposes of discussion, let us try and construct that history of the origin of music as an art form and medium. As such, the concepts and ideas that will follow will be largely hypothetical. Any parallels and similarities should not, in any way, be construed as actual and real.

Happy Birthday Elvis: Why Do Rockabilly Singers All Sound Like Elvis Presley?

Like many composers in the 19th century, Brahms made his reputation by playing his own and other composers pieces on the piano. From what I've read, he was not the most brilliant of pianists as far as technique, but he was very musical. In his later years he hated to practice and played the premiere of his 2nd Piano Concerto after hardly touching a piano in years.

Head’s up Madonna fans, ABC News has released a very short preview video of her upcoming appearance on the Nightline news program. At this point, there is very little information about Madonna‘s appearance on the show but we do know she will be interviewed by Cynthia McFadden and it is my assumption that she will be promoting the theatrical release of her directorial debut W.E. Click below to check out the short preview video in full.

7 seconds … that’s it … but it’s enough, right? I’ll be tuning in to see Maddy on Nightline. While I’m certain this interview will focus primarily on W.E., I’m hoping we’ll get more information about her upcoming new album and maybe some deets about her upcoming Super Bowl performance. Wee!!

First Look: David Beckham Releases A First Promo Ad For David Beckham Bodywear

Back in May of last year, we learned that David Beckham would be unveiling a line of products that would include fragrances and his own line of underwear. Considering that New Year’s Day fell on a Sunday this year, yesterday was the first full day of 2012 for me. I managed to get work done by day and then meet up and hang out with Darion by night. Poor D has been sick for far too long recently so last night was really our only chance to spend time together. The 3 of us (David included) went out for margaritas on the Sunset Strip so that we could catch up and just … hang. I also managed to find some time to watch cheesy movies yesterday … and happened to catch Poltergeist on cable. Not too bad for a Monday, I’d say.

Before the Xmas holiday, Darion had surgery that really opened him up to illness and the poor guy was a mess for a couple of weeks. By the time he got better, he had to fly up to Oregon to see his family for Xmas. If you can believe it, he got sick again while he was holidaying with his mom :( But, D managed to make it back to LA and altho we couldn’t hang out on New Year’s Eve (due to travel delays), we made the most of it by hanging out last night. It was really great to see him looking well again … and hopefully we’ll be hanging out again this week.

So, Poltergeist … truly one of my fave horror films of all time and deffo one of my fave 80s films. I saw Poltergeist for the first time when it debuted in cable in the early 80s and it scared the bejesus out of me:

When I watch the film even now, I’m reminded of how much it scared me as a child … such a great film. Y’all know how much I love the 80s and seeing all the fashions, hairstyles, toys and stuff featured in the film is always really fun. I used to be so jealous of Robbie and Carol Anne‘s bedroom because he seemed to have ALL of the coolest Star Wars toys. Then I would realize that he and his sister were tormented by demonic spirits and I wouldn’t be so jealous anymore … but still, dang, he had the best toys.

In any event, that was my day/night, pretty standard … can’t complain. Not sure what the plan is for tonight but … hopefully it’ll be fun.

Actor Robert De Niro is a dad again at age 68. Yep he and his wife announced they have welcomed a baby girl. Via a surrogate, Robert De Niro and wife actress/singer Grace Hightower 56 years old, are now the proud parents of a baby girl, Helen Grace Hightower. Their new daughter joins big brother Eliot who is 13 years old. The little girl is apparently doing just fine. She weighed in at a healthy 7 pounds and 2 ounces. Little Helen is the sixth child for the Academy Award winning actor who has four other children. He has a son Raphael from his first marriage to Diahnne Abbott. Robert also adopted Diahnne’s daughter Drena from a previous relationship. Then there are his 16-year old twin boys Julian and Henry from his relationship with Toukie Smith. Former SNL Writer Found Dead Of Apparent Suicide

Sad.
Yesterday, the body of 63-year-old former Saturday Night Live writer Joe Bodolai was found by a cleaning crew in a Los Angeles hotel room.

We kinda knew the drama was still boiling in Aunt Viv, but this confirms it.

Remember when we showed you the picture above?? It was such a fun reunion, but when the original Aunt Viv was asked why she didn't attend, she had some strong words to answer with!

Janet Hubert says:

There will never be a reunion as I will never do anything with an a$$hole like Will Smith. He is still an egomaniac and has not grown up. This constant reunion thing will never ever happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, which he doesn't know the word.

Say whaaa???

Uhm, we're pretty sure Will comes across as one of nicest guys in Hollywood. Aunt Viv, what's really the matter here?

A lot of people think she's just still bitter after being fired, pointing the finger at Will because she can't take responsibility for her own bad attitude!

Even Will once said:

She said once, 'I've been in the business for 10 years and this snotty-nosed punk comes along and gets a show.' No matter what, to her I'm just the Anti-Christ.

Well UR not to us, Will! And honestly, we could have a Fresh Prince reunion without her! Just like the series...ha!

Thoughts??

Tyler The Creator Denies Being Arrested Despite Authorities Confirming He Was And Releasing His Mug Shot!

Tyler the Creator is just keeping the clASSy going this holiday season, isn't he?

However, this morning, [...]

Sucks to be Mel Gibson!

The actor's divorce from ex-wife Robyn, with whom he was married for 30 years and had seven children, was finalized yesterday in El Lay, and she was rewarded with half of his estimated $850 million fortune, mainly due to them having no prenuptial agreement, which made her legally entitled to half of everything he earned during their time together!

Furthermore, she's already received two Malibu homes that previously belonged to him and are worth a combined $22.5 million, and she'll be entitled to half of every future residual check the actor receives for his film work for the rest of his life!

Well, this is how marriage works, we suppose - well, at least marriage without a pre-nup!

Merry Christmas to you this year, Robyn! Ha!

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Premieres In NYC

We are just about a week away from the theatrical premiere of David Fincher‘s version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but last night the Ziegfeld Theater in NYC, NY played host to the North American premiere of the film. Earlier this week, Dragon Tattoo premiered in London but last night it was time [...]

Last night, David and I were invited over to our friends’ Tom and Patrick’s home for dinner and we had a really nice time hanging out with them at their place. Tom and Patrick had their entire condo decked out for the holidays … it was so nice. The guys treated us to a sumptuous Beef Wellington dinner … which was beyond delish. We had a blast. After dinner, I made my way to the Music Box to see Dinosaur Jr. in concert. The band performed their 1988 album Bug in its entirety and pretty much rocked my face off. ‘Twas a pretty amazing night, I gotta say.

Before the show got underway, the members of Dinosaur Jr. were interviewed on stage by punk rock/poet Henry Rollins. Then, the band took over the stage and just RAWKED! Plain and simple, they sounded fantastic. I only saw Dino Jr. live in concert once before, many years ago so it was a nice treat to get to see that they still sound amazing.

On my way out of the Music Box, I came upon the star of the late Rock Hudson on the Hollywood Walk of Fame:

The block around the Music Box on Hollywood Blvd. is full of some of the most amazing stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I snapped a few photos and plan to share them on my Instagram profile in the coming days. I gotta say … it’s pretty cool living in LA sometimes ;D

Plans for tonight include a hang session with Ollie and Caleb. We haven’t seen those two in ages so it’ll be really fun to hang out with them. Happy Thursday!

Live Music Memories at Weddings and Corporate Parties

Many Classic Rock fans get from the music the feeling that some kind of esoteric knowledge is hidden within the lyrics. Much of the lyrical content of Classic Rock and particularly of Progressive or Prog Rock is based on visual symbolism. Rather than tell you facts, the lyrics paint you a picture and a picture is worth a thousand words, or rhymes.

Tips for Training Your Singing Voice

As a budding artist-songwriter, you have managed to write songs the audience respond well to, have signed up to your mailing list and email you back to compliment your work and sold a few of your demo CDs and earned some performance royalties from your showcases. The music venues you play at keep asking you to play instead of you asking them and they are also starting to mention to you about putting a band together, so that they can have you play at bigger nights. When all of these things start to happen, do no hesitate, it's time to...

Last night I got to hang out with my friends Erin and Halli for the whole night and altho we didn’t have a plan we ended up having a pretty fun evening together. The ladies took me to 5 Guys Burgers & Fries so I could find out what all the fuss is about and man, was that a great way to the start the night. The rest of the night was spent walking all over Manhattan enjoying the 70 degree weather. We checked out some of the storefront windows newly decorated for Xmas and ended up at our fave Mexican restaurant for margaritas and sangria. All in all, we had a fantastic night.

Halli insisted we visit the inside of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and I’m so glad she did … it is beautiful in that church. Of all the decorated windows we saw, I was most impressed with the Macy’s window. They have an interactive element where you can make your own virtual Xmas tree ornament and have it sent to your Facebook profile:

The highlight, tho, was getting to spend time with Halli and Erin. They both trained it into NYC for over an hour to hang out last night and I really appreciate their effort. We had so much fun hanging out … I hope we get to hang out every single time I visit NYC.

I’m not sure what is going on tonight. Our plans to have dinner with out friend Lisa fell thru so we may have a free night. As long as the weather stays warm, I’m ALL FOR going out on the town again ;)

Ugh. WE STILL CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT THE EFF NBC IS THINKING.

That's right, the network baffled the world earlier in the week when it announced that its HIGHlarious, cult-favorite comedy Community would be shelved in January to make room for the return of 30 Rock on Thursday night, and unsurprisingly, the news jolted last night's viewership of the comedy to score a 1.6 in the 18-49 demographic, with 3.63 million total viewers!

Meanwhile, by some cruel twist of fate, tWhitney somehow still managed a 4.1 million viewership, which for it was an all-time series LOW rating!

Again with the ugh.

Hopefully, this trend will continue though, and Community can gets its footing once again while Whitney sinks without a trace!

Fingers crossed!

Celebrity Birthdays Today: Kyle Chandler, Billy Miller, Phil Jackson More!

Happy Saturday, readers! I hope you all are having a fab weekend. Let’s see who’s a year older today, shall we? A ‘Fresh’ rapper is 45, can you guess who? Happy Birthday, Kyle Chandler. He turns 46 years old today. Tomorrow, we will find out if we can add ‘Emmy Award winner’ to his resume. He is nominated in the ‘Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series’ for his role as Eric Taylor in Friday Night Lights. He was nominated for the same award last year and in 2006 was nominated in the ‘Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series’ category when he appeared in four episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. My best bet is on Chandler to take home the award. Although Jon Ham of Mad Men is deserving as well. But really, it makes sense to honor Chandler for his work on FNL. The sentimental vote is in his favor, yes? Happy Birthday, Billy Miller! The soap actor is 31 years old today. You may not be familiar with Miller unless you are a soap fan such as myself. Miller starred as Richie Novak on All My Children, and now plays Billy Abbott on The Young and the Restless. [...]
